What is the difference between FTL and LTL?
FTL (full truck load) reserves the whole vehicle for one shipper; the trailer is loaded once, sealed, and unloaded once at destination. LTL (groupage) combines several shippers' cargo in one vehicle, and each shipper pays only for the space and weight it uses. For a detailed comparison, see our FTL vs LTL article.
What is this tool's decision based on?
The thresholds summarised below reflect industry averages (see the source article); Dealti's actual cost structure on a given lane can differ somewhat. The result is therefore always a recommendation, and the firm price is confirmed at the quotation stage.
| Shipment size | Usually the better fit |
|---|---|
| Under 4 LDM and under 5 tonnes | LTL (groupage) |
| 4 to 6 LDM, or 5 to 7 tonnes | Worth pricing both ways |
| 6 LDM or 7 tonnes and above | FTL (full truck) |
How is a pallet count converted to LDM?
A standard Euro pallet (1.20 x 0.80 m) takes up roughly 0.4 LDM when it cannot be stacked. If pallets can be stacked, the floor area needed is roughly halved. If your pallets are a non-standard size, our LDM calculator gives a more precise figure.
When does the tool always recommend FTL?
- When the pallet/weight threshold above is exceeded.
- When a single piece needs special handling equipment it cannot be lifted by forklift alone.
- When we do not run a regular groupage service on the route you selected.
Special requirements such as temperature control, fragile or high-value cargo, and a fixed delivery date do not change the calculation automatically; in those cases the result screen recommends speaking with our team.
Is the result a firm price?
No. This tool is for guidance only and is based on industry averages rather than Dealti's actual cost data. For a firm price and transit time, use our quote form.
