Special Drawing Rights (SDR)

Special Drawing Rights (SDR)
Special Drawing Rights (SDR) is an international reserve asset defined by the IMF and published daily as an exchange rate against major currencies. Under the CMR Convention, as amended by the 1978 Protocol, a carrier's liability for lost or damaged goods is limited to 8.33 SDR per kilogram of gross weight, unless a higher value was declared.

Not every CMR country has ratified the 1978 Protocol, so the 8.33 SDR limit does not apply uniformly across every country on a route; this matters directly for claims on the Turkey to Central Asia corridor. See Carrier Liability and Compensation Under the CMR for the full country-by-country breakdown and how compensation is calculated.
