# Freight Rate

A freight rate is the price a carrier charges to move a shipment between two points. In road transport it is quoted for a whole truck (FTL) or per unit of chargeable weight or loading metre (LTL), for a specific route and date.

A freight rate normally covers the transport itself: driver, fuel, vehicle and tolls on the agreed route. Customs duties, customs brokerage, cargo insurance and waiting beyond the agreed free time are usually charged separately. On Turkey to Central Asia shipments the rate depends strongly on which route is used, because the alternatives differ by many days. The factors behind the price are explained in [How Road Freight Rates Are Set](/en/insights/how-road-freight-rates-are-set).
