# Dry Port

A dry port is an inland terminal, far from the sea, that takes on a port's functions on land, such as cargo handling, storage and customs formalities.

Dry ports are usually built where rail and road meet, or next to border crossings. Cargo can be transferred there from one mode of transport to another or from one vehicle to another, and customs formalities can be completed before or at the border. Khorgos on the China-Kazakhstan border is one of the largest examples. In road freight out of China, cargo is often transferred to the international truck at [bonded warehouses](/en/insights/bonded-warehouse) in this area; see our [article on road freight from China to Turkey and the Caucasus](/en/insights/china-to-turkey-caucasus-road-freight).
