# CMR Insurance

CMR insurance is the cover a carrier holds for its own liability under the CMR Convention: the compensation it is legally required to pay a shipper for loss, damage or delay to goods while they are in its care during international road transport.

It is distinct from cargo (all-risk) insurance a shipper may buy separately, which does not depend on proving carrier fault and is usually not capped at the CMR liability limits. See [Carrier Liability and Compensation Under the CMR](/en/insights/cmr-carrier-liability-and-compensation-guide) for the liability limits and how a claim is handled.
